Mornington Crescent Tube Station, London

Named after a nearby street, it was opened in June 1907 as part of the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway (now the Charing Cross Branch of the Northern Line). Designed by Leslie Green in Arts & Crafts style. See my 19th May photo for one of his others.

Due to lack of use, it was only open in weekdays for many years. In 1992 it closed for refurbishment and nearly didn't reopen at all.

Mornington Cresecent station is well known due to its inclusion in the BBC radio programme I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. It is a spoof game. While it appears to have extremely complex rules, it actually has none. The station was reopened in April 1998 by the cast of the show Humphrey Lyttelton, Barry Cryer, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden. There's also a memorial plaque inside the station to Willie Rushton, a regular on the show.

The author Robert Rankin uses the station as the home of the Ministry of Serendipity, a fictional agency whose main activity is to ensure the British Empire rules the globe via dealings with aliens.
