Brown …. then yellow!

A few unexpected treats today. I retrieved my Trailcam from the garden today to view the now regular hedgehog images, and was astonished to see - yes, there it was, in blurry black and white, but quite unmistakeable - a badger!!! Seeing them is one of the few things I miss about our old house. Today, it's the anniversary of our big move. so it seems quite appropriate that he should appear. We had a lovely walk to some wildflower meadows, having been reminded about them last night at the Museum Event. Lovely, but the orchids there had gone over somewhat. I had hoped that there might be more species of butterfly around and although there were very many of these meadow browns, that was about it. We saw a buzzard being mobbed by crows, and a lovely bright yellow slime mould , and then, to our amazement, a deer (probably a roe deer) ran across the road in front of us. I have only ever seen red deer a long way from here on the Eastern Moors, so this was a real surprise. there were also lots of fungi around - even a nice big edible one.
One the principle of If you can't beat 'em, join 'em I thought I would start a 10 day countdown to the Tour de France tomorrow. There will be things yellow, bicycles, bunting, roadsigns…. of course anything special that crops up on the wildlife front will take precedence… The plant the butterfly is perched on os Yellow Rattle.
