Regent's Canal basin at Islington
My running route is now slightly to the west of where it used to be, and the canal section is very short. I join the canal just before it disappears into the Islington tunnel. This is a large basin, just after the tunnel entrance and a lock, and I thought the old boats and towpath, with the modern flats behind show what this section of the canal is like nowadays.
Trying to find the name of the basin, I found information about the Islington tunnel. There is no towpath through there, so barges had to be legged through for many years. I suppose that's where the expression "legging it" comes from?
Apparently, the job of tunnelling was given to Daniel Pritchard, who had a couple of successful tunnels on the Grand Union to his name. After successfully completing the Islington and Maida Vale tunnels, he went on to be a specialist tunnel engineer on other canals.
This route is still new, and I'm experimenting with the best way to and from the canal. This time, I took a wrong turn on the way back and ended up at Mount Pleasant, so had to thread my way back via Farringdon and Smithfield
