Ben: Superhero, Eric: Big Fat Zero
Ben is indestructible. Ben can climb walls. Ben can do anything. He's a real life superhero.
I can't say the same for Eric Clapton. Like many of the 12,000 or so fans we travelled to Glasgow to see one of the all time guitar greats. Over the years his fans have stood by him through all sorts of personal failings and tragedies. But that's what kind of makes your heroes, knowing they have failings. It's quite a cliche the tortured genius and all that.
But now to Eric's list you can add petulance, rudeness and a plain disregard for the people who keep him in the luxury he lives. You'd think at 69 years of age and all he's been through he'd have grown up a bit. You'd think!
Part way through the concert and a technical fault sent some trouser shaking feedback through the auditorium. Eric's response was to unplug his guitar in mid-song and walk off the stage. Followed quickly by the rest of the band.
A few minutes later and back they came, played one more song and ran off the stage. The lights came on immediately and the roadies appeared to dismantle the set. The crowd were stunned. That was it - all over.
Seems that Eric just "lost it". Dead right he did, he lost a lot of fans.
