When I was a child
When I was a child I used to collect bubble gum cards. I had various sets over the years.
I even had a double set of The Man from Uncle. It was two sided, the rear side, when connected, made a complete picture of Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin. These were put up on my bedroom wall, which must have been a pain for my mum, seeing as the were put up with drawing pins.
I also had Mars Attacks
But the strangest set I had was Civil War News. Released in 1962, they were released to commemorate the American civil war. They contained generally extremely brutal images, images which make modern computer games tame in comparison. They had text on the back telling the story of the picture. One that has stuck in my mind, was of one group of soldiers pushing a huge spiked wheel, which these reminded me of, down a hill onto the opposing forces.
But on looking online, I can't seem to see the image that is so vivid in my memory.
The cards were highly informative, telling the story of two odd battles. One was the sinking of the USS Alabama of the the coast of France, yes France, Europe, and the other involving a submarine.
Both true.
