Frenetic . . . or not

We took the train from Appleby to Leeds. Every time we do this, we wonder why we don’t do it more often. It’s a great journey, however many times you’ve done it, as those who have travelled the Settle/Carlisle Railway will attest to.

Lunch at Jamie’s, a wander through the city, stopping at just a few choice shops, such as Waterstones and Jessops!! Then onto the City Museum and the Art Gallery. Strange being a tourist in a city you have known all your life. We spent a lot of time, as usual, trying to orientate ourselves with well-known landmarks, figuring out what is still there, what has changed and what has disappeared.

I took pictures of fine buildings and of this, which stands outside the Art Gallery. It is a huge work by the Leeds-born ‘internationally influential’ sculptor, Thomas Houseago, and was specially commissioned for the Yorkshire Festival 2014.

Sited right on the Headrow, the sculpture alludes to the frenetic bustle of the surrounding urban landscape.

I couldn’t help but smile when I read this, as the scene right below the sculpture, with the serious games of chess being played and watched in the sunshine outside the City Hall, could definitely not be described as ‘frenetic bustle’! Look large to see the players and the range of spectators. I love this scene.
