In Memoriam...

Remember with their fellow countrymen of an earlier generation these sailors soldiers and airmen who served and died in war and are buried in the cemetery.

I was surprised that the largest cemetery in the country has only 41 graves from the Second World War.

No-one knows how many Irish died in the war. Wikipedia claims 10,000, but the only definite figure is over 2,500. The MoD records list at least that many telegrams sent to Irish addresses of next of kin.

My uncle isn't one of that number. He married a girl from Stockton-on-Tees while based in Yorkshire, so his telegram went there, or to RAF Methwold where he took off from 70 years ago…
