Bashful Birthday Beauty

It’s Spokes’ birthday today and we’ve both had the day off work which has been most welcome!

It’s been a pretty lazy day – just what we needed – but we had an evening out at the Open Eye Gallery for a talk/presentation by photojournalist Howard Davies which is part of local activities for Refugee Week.

Howard spent two decades covering the human impact of wars and conflicts in such places as the Balkans, Rwanda and Afghanistan and his photographs of displaced people and refugees are extremely moving. You can see some of them here...

Both Spokes and I have worked with refugees and asylum seekers at one time or another and this is a subject which is dear to both our hearts. We were really impressed by Howard’s humanity and his ethical approach to his work even in the most dehumanising of circumstances.

After the talk we walked across town to have an absolutely delicious meal at Puschka – and to count our blessings.
