Being Dad

There's no escaping Father's Day here in the UK today.
We don't go in for it much in our family. My husband is of the view it's a construct by card companies.
He got a card from M&S so maybe he's partly right!
All over the weekend newspapers and on Facebook, people have been talking about their fathers or fathers have been talking about being dad.
Because of this, my own dad has been on my mind.
His birthday was on June 28 and we never bothered much about Father's Day as a result. As long as there was lemon meringue pie from the Coffee Club in Kilmarnock at some point, dad was happy!
He was a minister too so normally didn't have time to for Father's Day celebrations as he was working.
He died ten years ago on July 5 2004. It seems unreal that he's not been around for a whole decade but your parents never leave you. They're just not physically there.
This shows Dad in full flow late performing Goliath of Gath; his party piece. This usually happened late on Christmas Day and after much cajoling! He was always shattered by Christmas night having had a busy festive season ministering to the village. Not to mention a late night the previous night for the Watchnight Service.
My brother and I used to love it when after much persuasion he launched into Goliath of Gath.
We'd be rolling around in stitches as he mimicked a wee boy singing: 'Goliath he swore - he swore and he swore. Blank, blank, blank, blank, blank, blank and quite a lot more...'
He must have performed it back in the day at a university review. I never asked. I wish I had.
Dad had a real talent for comedy.
I see it in my son too. See what I mean? They never leave you.
