Carlyle

In the mid-nineteenth century Thomas Carlyle was a bit of a literary rock star for his writings on German philosophy. No one much reads his stuff any more - it's far too dense, but back then it would have earned him a knighthood and a state granted pension had he taken them. He refused, saying he had quite enough money already, thank you.
