Hornchurch
Today I visited Holy Cross, Hornchurch to lead a session on working with children & families. Members of this faithful & honest group are into all sorts including running a creche for visiting times at the local prison & helping at a local children's contact centre.
The church has a striking wicker sculpture near the entrance, with interesting origins. The huge wicker angel mysteriously turned up on the doorsteps of the church in 2012. Folks don't know where it came from or who left it there, quite a mystery.
The church of The Holy Cross, Hornchurch originated in 1920 when a hut, formerly a chapel in the army camp, was re-erected on the present site to serve as a mission church and social centre. Many churches I visit are trying to re-create themselves for the future. Here, they are thinking hard about rediscovering their past, which sounds great.
