These signs occur in fishing villages both north and south of the country, they hark back to a time when there was little or no movement between communities, which tended to suffer from inbreeding. Consequently both male and females tended to be judged on other factors than mere looks as today.
The notice was a typical joke of the time, alluding to the lack of choice for young (and not so young) people in the closed local communities, often only connected with it's neighbour by sea, or pack mules over dirt tracks.
Historically they are quite quaint and interesting!
(Though this one is a modern version because of the reference to an "Outboard Motor"
originals came out before such things existed and would have referred to either a motor or engine.)
