Greek Street, London

Stuffed with buildings with a history, Greek Street runs from Soho Square to Shaftesbury Avenue in London's Soho district.

No.1 Greek Street was the House of Charities, built in 1746. Latterly the House of St Barnabas, a home for the poor. Since October 2013, is has been a private members club which, although that seems to be a switch to being a home for the rich, it still gives lots of money to the homeless and is not for profit. Inside, it is the best surviving example of the English Rococo style, if you ever get in there.

No.9 was the location of the Turk's Head Tavern where the Ancient Grand Lodge of England Freemasons was started in July 1751.

No.29 is The Coach & Horses pub, where the fortnightly editorial lunch of Private Eye is held.

No. 47 was the home of Giacomo Casanova in 1764.

No. 49 was the home of the legendary folk music club, Les Cousins.

The street forms the setting for the 1930 film Greek Street, directed by Sinclair Hill and starring Sari Maritza and William Freshman.
