Groan...

Had to reinstall to get my external disk back. On a positive note - I have gotten to grips with the space problem. A purge of crap and near duplicates saw me regaining 20Gig. I got another 10 Gig back when I ditched iphoto for Adobe Lightroom. Apparently iphoto seems to make a copy of your pictures when you open them in an editor, rotate them, sneeze etc which I didn't realise until I started poking around the hardisk. Ah well -all's well again...
