One of Three........
.........very tall Annual Poppies - (not the big Oriental ones) - just out this morning - there seem to be loads of buds still to open. They MAY be from seeds Anni brought me from "foreign parts" - all I know is that there must have been thousands of seedlings. One small trowel- full I dug out contained over 100 babies and the whole patch was about 2ft square!
BOUI:-
1) A type of poppy native to the Mediterranean region yields a substance called opium, a drug that was used in the ancient world to ease pain and bring on sleep. The Greeks associated poppies with both Hypnos, god of sleep, and Morpheus, god of dreams. Morphine, a drug made from opium, gets its name from Morpheus.
2) Leaves and petals are used in a standard infusion for sore throats, cough, and chest congestion, catarrh, hay fever, asthma, dyspepsia, dysentery, insomnia, nerve pain, and other respiratory complaints.
3) Poppy seed used as topping on cookies, breads, rolls; in cake fillings, fruit salads, canapés, and sweet vegetables. (These poppy seeds are not from the opium poppy.)
Another different sort of morning - overcast but brightish - temperature at 64 Deg.F. - much cooler than yesterday.
Have a good day.
