Imperial or metric
The UK is part metric and part imperial. Weights are supposed to be metric but we can still ask for half a pound of mince in the butchers. Weight on all packaged foodstuffs is metric. But do you know your weight in kilograms - I don't. Lengths of material for soft furnishing are bought in metres but you can ask for yards. Wood is bought in metres as is most DIY stuff- do we buy 1" nails or 2.5 cm nails??
We buy fuel in litres. But distances on the road are still measured in miles. This is the sign post in the middle of my village. Are we still using miles because of the huge cost of changing all the road signs? It will be a shame to lose these fractions of a mile. The Tonbridge Rural District Council (TRDC on the top of the sign) disappeared in 1972 but I cannot find out how long it had been in existence so I do not know how old the sign is. I wonder how much longer it will last.
