Botanical Evolution

One of a number of panels profiling the history of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The panels form part of an exhibit about the project to rebuild the Botanics Cottage in the garden. The cottage was originally located at the entrance to the now lost botanic garden on Leith Walk (the location of the botanic garden prior to it moving to its current position on Inverleith Walk). Medical students were taught botany in cottage. The panel featured here refers to the two founding botanic gardens in Edinburgh at Holyrood and at Trinity College Hospital (in the current site of Waverley Station - look out for the plague commemorating the garden between platforms 7 and 11). Both gardens were used extensively to teach medical botany to students and apothecary apprentices.
