Alleyway, Norwich, England

The Norwich area was originally the main settlement of the Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudica.

In 60 AD, after battles with the Iceni, the Romans built a town here called Venta Icenorum - 'the market place of the Iceni'.

By 450 AD, the Roman Empire had ended and Venta Icenorum abandoned.

250 years later, the Anglo-Saxons had created their own town in the area and called it North Town, which in Anglo-Saxon is 'Northwic'.

Over the next 400 years it became one of the largest trading cities in Europe.
