Scary tree

What a shock when we came across this and then several more trees like this today. They were completely covered in webs. Apparently they are the product of ermine moth caterpillars who work together to spin these giant webs which completely engulf trees and other sources of food. The web protects the caterpillars from prey whilst they gorge and strip the tree of leaves before metamorphosing into moths. It should have been Halloween!
