Snips and Snaps

Mingulay

Imagine waking up in this small dwelling to that view, but how bleak in winter. After two thousand years or more of continuous habitation, like those on St Kilda the Gaelic-speaking residents decided that life was too harsh on the island and in 1912 Mingulay was abandoned.

On Thursday we took a boat from Barra to Mingulay 12 miles south - the second largest of the Bishop's Isles in the Outer Hebrides.

Not the best of weather, but we climbed all four of the summits on the island and sat and watched the Kittiwakes, and Razorbills, which nest in the sea-cliffs before dropping down to the grassy slopes where the puffins have their burrows. Such an amazing place : )
