Spaniard

Well at least it looks like a Spaniard to me. It is a member of the Speargrass family, usually known as Spaniard in New Zealand. It was flowering in the Rock Garden at the Botanic Gardens and looks great against the blue sky. Spaniards grow in the hills of New Zealand and have very sharp leaves and flamboyant flowers. You don't want to walk into them!
