Forlorn Dovecot

Situated on what is now the Forest Way sits the former crossing keeper's cottage at Brambletye Crossing .

At the moment it is shrouded in scaffolding as half the house has been demolished to form the base of a new building away from the former railway line. {Now known as Brambletye Stables Cottage}. Clearly money has run out or something improbable has been discovered. But for the past 3 years no work has been undertaken.

The first occupant appears to have been Henry Killick, he was replaced by George Elmes who died on 15/4/1899 to be replaced by Charles Lee who promptly died on 4/5/1900. Edwin Kempsell stayed until 31/3/1905 to be replaced by Richard Tompsett. He stayed right to the 1923 railway grouping. After that railway staff records are not kept to the same standard as those of the London Brighton & South Coast Railway.

The one thing that seems to have survived amidst all this desolation is the dovecot.
