Grandad

This is my grandad who died 30 years ago this year. I've been thinking about him a lot today as he landed on Juno beach 70 years ago.
During the first big commemoration, at the 40 year anniversary, I asked him if he was at Normandy. Grandad told me that he was, and when they came off the landing craft, the water was deeper than expected, so the soldier next to him, being quite short, had disappeared beneath the surface. The back packs were so heavy that the man wasn't going to easily take it off, and couldn't get to the surface, so grandad grabbed him by the straps and pulled him to shallower water.
Instead of thanking grandad for saving his life, the soldier could only complain about all his cigarettes being wet, which grandad found amusing!
Then Grandad's wife told him not to talk about the war, and he stopped. Sadly he died soon after that, so I never had the chance to talk to him again, and now of course there's a million things I want to know about that time!
