Bug swarm

Driving home tonight, my son said "Dad, look at those trees - they're on fire!" . They weren't, but I've never seen anything like this before. A street full of trees (and even some streetlights) were being mobbed by swarms of some sort of insect. I thought they were bees, but on maybe not.
