Tlahuitoltepec is reknowned for its culture of band music. At most hours of the day, especially mornings and evenings, one can hear practice going on in various parts of town. When an anthropologist, Dr. Nahmad Sitton, arrived to the region to study he determined that an excellent project for development would be to support and strengthen the inherent interest in music. So was born CECAM – the Center for Musical Capacity and Development of Mixe Culture. The tradition is on display in the very heart of the town as a tuba sits atop the kiosk.
