Commemorative Medal. GX1, Leitz Elmarit 90mm.

Inspired by yesterday's Blip I decided to proceed further down this macro road. Today's Blip is a silver commemorative medal to mark the 150th anniversary of the University of Cape Town. U.C.T., my Alma Mater, had its humble beginnings as the South African College Schools. In fact, my late father went to school there when it was (and probably still is) a very good school from which to matriculate. He then went on to study medicine at U.C.T., which had by then become a separate and distinguished world-class university. The Lionesses' Gateway depicted in exquisite detail on the medal still stands as a national monument. It was the gateway to the gardens and menagerie founded by the Dutch East India Company at the Cape of Good Hope in the mid-17th century, so Wiki tells me. The original S.A.C.S. campus stood right next to those gardens. Today, the buildings house the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Drama School of U.C.T. The casting of the gate is raised and etched to a matte finish on the medal. In fact, there is so much relief that I wanted to accentuate it by shining the light at an angle across it. I'm pleased to have not only graduated from U.C.T. but to have this lovely item lo these thirty four years later.
