Wilder-Swaim House

More snow flurries on and off throughout the day, and still very cold. Late morning, Laura and I ventured out to the gym to get our exercise. After lunch, we played the word game again we were playing last night, and I got revenge, beating her twice! This evening, the three of us went out to our local Thai restaurant, then went out to see a movie. I took this shot after dinner down in Montgomery. I had passed it at night the other evening, and thought how pretty it looked in the snow, with the wreaths still hanging at the windows. The Wilder Swaim house is on the National Register of Historic buildings, and is located in Swaim Park. The house was the home to the first residents of Montgomery, James & Susan Wilder, who arrived from Rhode Island with six children. When first moving in they lived in only the smaller section of the home, the two-story addition being added later, in the 1840's. Years later, in 1917, the home was bought by William T. Swaim, who was principal of Montgomery School. Mr. Swaim's daughter married and she and her husband changed the farm into an eighteen hole golf course in 1933. In 1976, the golf course was sold for a residential development. Fortunately, throughout this the house survived and was bought by the City of Montgomery together with thirteen acres for a park. The building now houses the Montgomery Historical Society.
