An important and vexed question today, and one that I often find myself considering: which is Bob Dylan's best album? Received opinion would have it that it's one of the great mid-sixties trilogy, and old folkies would argue that it's his second album (Freewheelin'). At times I've agreed with all of the above, but every time I hear 'Blood on the Tracks', I become convinced that it's his most perfect creation - suddenly all the wild, surreal lyrics fall away and he's telling personal stories - not quite unambiguously, but with a certain directness and compassion. So that's settled then. For now.
