Monday's Chair
A metaphor. I even forgot my goggles for the lunchtime swim.
So for 1984 I've chosen a tune that I certainly wasn't into at the time, but from a band that no self respecting indie fan boy can survive without in their collection. I remember going to high school in 1988 and wondering why so many of the older pupils had t-shirts with The Smiths written on them, but was put off listening by the inclusion of 'Last of the Famous International Playboys' appearing on my Now 14 album - a track which I fast forwarded each and every listen. Maybe I was just in a hurry to hear 'Every Rose Has it's Thorn'. I reckon it would be 1993 when I eventually got round to it, prompted by the comparisons between Suede and The Smiths. Love at first listen? Of course it was. Even when the first album I purchased was Rank. I've picked Reel Around the Fountain as their best from 84, mostly prompted by Erland Oye choosing it has his all time favourite during a Kings of Convenience gig.
