Walberswick wind pump - a favourite with artists
This enigmatic scene shows the derelict 18th century wind pump, which is now a Grade 11 listed building. It was in operation until 1940. Now the grazing marshes that it would have drained have reverted to reed beds. The reeds are harvested as a crop to supply the demand for thatching throughout the country.
For me this walk through the reed beds represents the Suffolk fen land. The wind pump typifies the Suffolk scenery, especially with cranes and marsh harriers flying overhead and bitterns booming in the reeds. What an amazing place, I just love it!
