I think conservation in the hands of volunteers and trusts is a good thing. Dept of conservation I dont think could have achieved this.
Maybe I'm talking rubbish , but the reality is huge amounts of work and dedication have gone into making the sighting of what should be a common NZ native bird in an area with no predator fence and not on an Island.
And yesterday they released a kiwi out here after it having spent some time at the Warrnheim fenced area. We've met these folk before
