Aldwych - The Secret Station
We've had a great day out in London. We've been waiting a while to join one of the rare open days at Aldwych Underground Station.
Aldwych station was closed to passengers in 1994 due to dwindling passenger numbers (the station was losing money). It was always an oddity, described as a twig at the end of a branch of the Piccadilly line. It has seen a myriad of uses: wartime shelter, wartime storage location for valuable artworks (including the Elgin Marbles), a test surface for tube station decor and more recently a film and video location (notably the video for 'Firestarter" by The Prodigy).
It was a fascinating visit, well lead by knowledgeable volunteers and loaded with interesting facts and anecdotes. The platforms featured lots of great posters, the tunnels full of abandoned stories. No tripods and the darkness meant some high ISO shots but better that way than blurred and amazing how good the image stabilser is in these situations!!
After the tour we walked to Covent Garden, then grabbed some food at Kings Cross. In the evening Annie picked up a train to Edinburgh for a couple of days work.
