Music al Fresco

There wasn't a cloud in the sky and it was warming up nicely when we set out for Spring Lake this morning. I always enjoy the weekend scene on a nice day here. The swimming lagoon has opened for the summer, and the Lakeside Grill is open for breakfast, lunch and happy hour! The tables with jaunty blue and red umbrellas are set out on the sand overlooking the action in the lagoon, and the scent of scrambled eggs, french toast, bacon and coffee tempt passers by.

Walking around the lake, there was the usual complement of kids in various conveyances, including a little girl in a pink plastic push chair shaped like a truck, and a very small boy on a very small bicycle in a racy looking yellow helmet. There were men fishing from boats, and men fishing from the rocky shore. A father instructed his son on the fine points of bait before casting their lines into the water. Fishing just doesn't seem to appeal to women.

The two guys in today's picture could be heard a considerable distance away, and were good enough that I was surprised when I saw them and realized that they were not just listening to a radio. A white haired lady nearby sat at a picnic table loaded with coolers and bags of food and sporting gear. The musical selections emanating from the radio on the table didn't seem quite appropriate, as if they had been chosen by someone younger before leaving grandma to hold the fort.

The geese were out in force each couple accompanied by goslings ranging in size and demeanor from awkward adolescents to very young chicks. Although they had chosen a very exposed spot by the snack bar, they all seemed fairly oblivious to the passing parade of humanity and dogs.

Back in the parking lot, families with small children unloaded food and beach gear from their cars, while giggling bathing suit clad teen agers set up near the handsome lifeguards.

The kids all finished school on Friday, and summer has officially begun….
