Summiting Cul Mor, looking towards Suilven
A great day, taking our friends up their first Corbett. (Scottish Mountains 2,500 - 3000ft). We climbed Cul Mor, which is 2,800 ft, with 8 miles rough walking. We met only one other group, from France. We walked on a good Stalkers' Path for a couple of miles, then on soft peat, all the time with fabulous views across Sutherland. It was not too hard a climb though nearer the top we got stuck Into a confusion of rocks and that combined with the steepness of the slope caused a few scary moments - possible to get up, but going down would gave been a struggle. Until the gradient got so steep we didn't want to look down, we kept stopping to admire all the mountains rearing out of the bog - in addition to Suilven, in the blip, we could see looking north, Canisp, Breabag, Quinag, Cul Beag, Conival, Ben More Assynt, Fionaven and Arkle. Looking south-east from the summit we saw the Deargs and Fannichs, due south was An Teallach and Sail Mhor, and to the west was the sea and the Summer Isles. The French said that although they had higher mountains, nothing could match the splendid remoteness of the Scottish mountains. We had to agree.
