Safe Water, #Zanzibar
Our partners in Zanzibar are working hard to provide access to safe water in many villages and communities in Zanzibar.
There are various problems that people face in Zanzibar when trying to collect water. For example, wells exist in many schools and villages but there are no storage tanks attached and the pumps used to draw water to the surface burn out if used continuously, so they are restricted for use a few hours a day. This creates many challenges for the community. In order to meet their needs people supplement with less safe sources of water, which can be contaminated by waterborne diseases such as Cholera, of which there are regular, deadly outbreaks on the island.
One solution is to provide water tanks with a tap stand for a communities, giving a reliable and easy way to draw a supply of safe drinking water available 24 hours per day. This has freed up women and children’s time for more productive activity, such as going to school and earning much needed income.
The health and economic prospects of the community are now benefiting from this continuous supply of safe, clean water.
