St Peter, Moulton, Suffolk

A more leisurely day today, in and around Newmarket just inside Suffolk. We visited a number of churches but I only managed to get inside two as the rest were all locked, and that at Burwell where we are staying was closed all day for a funeral.

Suffolk is one of the finest counties in England for its churches but despite this, in many places it does seem that visitors are not welcome. I encountered not just locked doors, but padlocks as well as I found at a place called Kentford. The church at Moulton did at least have a keyholder listed and I returned after lunch to the local Post Office where it can be obtained.

This church stands on a hill on the edge of the village and the tower is late 13th Century and the rest mostly early 16th Century. It is very light and airy inside as there is almost no stained glass. It is quite plain as well but has a lot of carving high up and on each of the pillars. It was well worth seeing inside but it does not have many monuments. It is at least in regular use and work needs to be done to combat damp and new heating I understand.
