Recycling.....

One of the last sites in the phenomenally successful Spinningfields development is about to be built on. If we hadn't had the recession it would have happened years ago. It's been a lawn for years now lined with trees but it's about to be turned into another glass office tower. Good for the city's economy but bad for the lawn and the trees. They have been cut down. I was there to see them lying in pieces all over the lawns.

I was sad to see them all cut down and chopped into pieces across the lawn they had been gracing. I hope when the Cotton Building is finished they plant more or find a space somewhere else to plant new ones.

About 4 30 I headed back to St. Peter's Square to catch the tram to Trafford Bar. The rush hour was just kicking in but I managed to get on a tram. As I got off I saw this sharply dressed guy with a skate board and a log. He was taking the log home on the board. When I first saw him he was actually sat on the log and was wheeling it out of the tram station with his feet. It was faster and more comfortable for him to do that than guiding it with his hand. He had to bend over and it was slower and hurting his back. I put two and two together and asked if he worked in Spinningfields? He did and, like me, had been sad to see the trees go. So he's taking a few of the cut pieces home, one each day, on his board, to use for stools in his garden not far from the tram station.

I really wanted a picture of him sitting on it but, while it was funny, it wouldn't have been the most dignified of pictures for him. But good on him for rescuing some of the wood at least and giving it another life.
