Here there and everywhere

Philae, Aswan, Upper Egypt

Better luck today in getting to Philae Temple on Philae Island. We set off early this morning though before 8am on the 10 minute journey, just in case, after yesterday's adventure! This temple, many thousands of years old and one of the most sacred sights in Egypt, was moved stone by stone in 1960 to this island, having been submerged by the construction of the Aswan Low Dam in 1902 and about to be completely lost with the construction of the High Dam in the 1960s. It is indeed very impressive and this is just a little glimpse of it here. It was my first visit, but Bb was here 34 years ago and has written about it on his blip today:
Philae

After the visit we came back to the hotel as this is our last full day in Aswan and we wanted to be able to appreciate the surroundings. We swam a bit, read a bit, enjoyed the view a bit. Now, we're about to have dinner in the semi-formal French restaurant. We didn't realise this place was quite as grand as this when we booked and so need to see what clothes we have that can pass as semi-formal! The restaurant has very good write-ups, so fingers crossed. We've been eating mainly Egyptian mezze dishes since we arrived, so tonight is a bit of a treat.

PS: I've also added some extra shots to my Blipfolio...here
