Greenway

A week ago we took a walk south from Lenno along the Greenway. Today we took a walk north through Mezzegra until Tremezzo.

The first part of the walk involved quite a steep climb up the hill away from Lenno towards Mezzegra. This is a pretty hillside town with several old buildings including an impressive 16th century church. Mezzegra has achieved a certain notoriety as the place where Mussolini and Claretta Petacci were killed, having been captured by partisans the day before as they attempted to escape to Switzerland.

The weather was not great, and we had to take shelter from the rain a couple of times, especially as I was totally inadequately dressed for both the rain and the temperature. Leaving Mezzegra the Greenway descends to the lake once again and arrives at Tremezzo.

The building in the photograph is the Villa La Quiete built in the 18th century for the Duke of Carretto. Arriving at Tremezzo we stopped for lunch, once again sheltering from the rain though we were able to sit outside under a canopy, before returning to Lenno by ferry.
