Orkney Day 1
We awoke to more strong winds and driving rain so another full Scottish breakfast seemed like a good start to the day!! We're going on the 1pm ferry from Gills Bay to Orkney but after packing our bags there was just enough time to drive to Duncansby Head for me to have a walk to see the stunning triangular stacks, the lighthouse! and the steep cliffs studded with Thrift and home to hundreds of sea birds nesting precariously on the ledges. Despite the rain and wind it was worth it. Mr T stayed in the car !!
The ferry journey was a little choppy but the rain eased off so we stood out on deck for most of it and enjoyed our first misty view of St. Margaret's Hope where we're staying for the next 5 days at The Leith's House.
The owner of this lovely old house was outside to meet us and kindly showed us around and how everything worked etc. The Leith's House is right on the edge of the harbour and our views are stunning. These lobster pots are on the slipway right beside the house and there are Eiderducks nesting there too.
We've unpacked, again, and off to explore St. Margaret"s Hope and then to Kirkwall for provisions to stock the larder.
