The lady of the hills...
The Lady's Slipper orchid is returning to the limestone hills around Cumbria and Yorkshire.
Following a lengthy breeding programme at Kew Gardens and more than a decade of careful growing on in nurseries around the area, these fantastic native wild flowers of Northern England are being repatriated to their old haunts, after being driven to the very brink of extinction by our Victorian ancestors.
A solitary plant remained in the wild, and just a few in the gardens of stately homes, but from these precious relics they have been reborn!
You can see them growing in the wild at Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve next weekend when there is an open day for viewing.
Well worth a trip, and don't forget to smell them!
