St. Bernard's Well

K and I went for a walk today along the Water of Leith (one of my favorite things to do in Edinburgh) toward Stockbridge. We watched with horror as a female duck with ducklings tried desperately to get away from a male duck that kept trying to have his way with her. (this gathered quite a crowd and some concern for the little ones...that's nature for you!) We didn't stay to see the result but I hope she was reunited with her babies. We continued on the pleasant walk passing many fellow strollers. Our journey ended at St. Bernard's well, a landmark I was introduced to by a friend of mine and a wonderful little work of art. Apparently the well had a reputation for it's health giving properties, the statue in the middle is Hygieia, goddess of Health. It was based on a design by Edinburgh landscape artist Alexander Nasymth who was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli. Anyway it is a lovely thing to look at and a great way to pass a Sunday afternoon.
