Twisted hazel
That was what I was told on the way back from Uni. When I was ready to take a photo, the owner, a lady came back and explained to me about this with her zest and overridden performance by breaking the only straight branch before I could make a stop.
Actually she got the wrong name at the start by calling it a kind of willow. Willow? I know how willows look like but never the broad, yet folded, leaves like this. The she managed to find a label card at her neighbour's younger hazel.
She said each year there would be a straight one out of the tortuously twisted ones and she had to break them - ouch!
