The view from Mjällomberget - Mjällom mountain
Today was gloriously sunny and really warm. It feels like spring is coming to an end and summer is waiting to take over. It was warm enough that you wanted to sit in the shade sometimes!
Up at 06:30, which was a little tricky after last night's party and late night. Drive 45 minutes to Mjällom harbour where our boat club was lifting all the boats into the water with a start at 8:00. The wooden sailing boat, a folk boat, which I inherited in very bad condition, went into the water and sank, as usual. The wood dries during the winter and cracks open. The boat is launched onto a shallow spot so the deck doesn't go under when the keel is in the bottom. After 36 hours the wood has swelled a lot and when I pump out the boat it floats and leaks just a little. A couple of days later the boat is so watertight that a battery driven pump keeps it dry the whole summer on one charge.
After all the boats were lifted in, a very sociable time, I left the harbour and walked up the nearby Mjällom "mountain" which is actually only 281 meters high but has fabulous views as the sea lies on three sides of the mountain. It is a nature reserve, partly because it has both fossilized beaches and sea caves near the top of the mountain. These were formed about 2500 years ago when the sea was 250 meters higher than it is now, or to be more accurate, when the land was 250 meters lower than it is now!
The view here is looking east, towards the island of northern Ulvön (Wolf Island) from the northern side of the mountain.
Finally it was home to cut the grass, another two hours of hard slog.
All-in-all another very good day with lots of fresh air and exercise.
