May Bug

Most of the day spent dodging the showers while continuing to get the garden sorted and in a cool shady spot behind the greenhouse I spotted this May Bug on the underside of foliage. (best seen in large) They are nocturnal flyers and can be attracted to light sources. I have sometimes seen them at dusk zooming across the garden or on the outside of a lighted window. Just once we had one come indoors and it spent quite some time belting round the inside of a big paper lantern like a wall of death rider on a motorbike. They are noisy but neither bite nor sting; adults grow to 25-30 millimetres and have a curious set of white triangle shapes along each flank. Also known as "Cockchafer" which is Old English for big beetle.
