La Petite France

is a neighborhood at the heart of old Strasbourg, one of its most picturesque. Fishermen, millers and tanners used to live and work there. These timbered houses at the water's edge were built in the XVI and XVII centuries; their large attics were used to dry out skins for the then prevalent tannery industry. The neighborhood was totally leveled during WWII and rebuilt to an exact match afterwards.

It was good strolling around there and getting reacquainted, as I'd spent three months there during my uni days some 30 years ago! :)
