Hornet

I was mowing the lawn at the back end of the garden when my wife called me over to show me this not-so-little beastie. There isn't much in the shot to give scale, but it was getting on for as long as my thumb. Fortunately I'd left the telephoto lens on the camera which was on one of the garden chairs, so I snatched it up and took several shots. My wife did offer to go and get the macro lens, but I thought of lying down on the grass 15cm away from something which looked like it could eat me and decided that discretion was the better part of valour!
