Bowood 2014 #12: Stand-Off

It was raining lightly when I wandered down to the Temple, stopping to admire some cowslips, and looked across the Lake.

Two pairs of great crested grebes were taking turns to dive into the lake and surface somewhere completely different to confound my attempts to count them. A group of deer ran quickly across a patch of grass on the other side of an inlet, accompanied as they ran by a pair of young rabbits. A pair of mallards escorted a group of ducklings across the lake, and a pair of grey herons fished on the banks of the lake across from where I stood.

One of the herons took off and landed a few yards away from the mallard duck and her charges, who by now had landed on the far side of the water. The ducklings huddled up behind their mother who stood implacably facing the chancing heron.

Fortunately, the heron realised his prey was too well defended, and turned the other way. The mallard led the chicks across a path and exited stage right, as I made my way back to the car before they locked the gates.
