Know your Onions

Allium akaka native to Turkey, Russian Armenia and Iran, where it grows amongst volcanic rocks and on screes and steppes.

From between broad ribbed leaves, tightly packed flower buds emerge in late Spring. As the other bulbs begin to die back in the summer heat the buds explode into an open, almost spherical umbel of flowers.

Not an onion I shall be cooking with!
