The Road Goes Ever On And On
For much of its route, the Clarendon Way follows the path of an old Roman road. Today I was walking on my own, hardly seeing anyone else all day. And as I followed the road under the shade of the trees, with birdsong and shadow surrounding me, I couldn't help thinking of Bilbo's song, as he leaves Bag End and sets off for Rivendell:
The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.
